The Army's oldest active proving ground, the post was established in Maryland in 1917 after the onset of World War I to provide a military facility where ordnance materiel could be designed, tested and carried out in proximity to main U.S. industrial and shipping centers. Aberdeen Proving Ground's 72,500 acres consist of two main areas separated by the Bush River. It is a key posting as a center for testing, lab research and military training.

The typical tour for military personnel at an installation is 3-4 years.
